The United Nations has issued an urgent warning that the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) is approaching a "breaking point" because of a funding gap of approximately $100 million. The agency says the financial crisis is threatening its ability to continue providing food, healthcare, education, and emergency assistance to millions of Palestinian refugees across Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appealed to member states to increase financial support, warning that the agency has already implemented deep cost-cutting measures and can no longer absorb further reductions without affecting critical humanitarian operations. He said the combination of severe funding shortages and operational restrictions has placed UNRWA in one of the most difficult situations in its history.
UNRWA remains one of the largest humanitarian organizations operating in the Palestinian territories, providing essential services to millions of registered refugees. In Gaza, where humanitarian needs remain extremely high, the agency plays a central role in delivering emergency food supplies, medical care, shelter, and educational support. Officials warn that any disruption to these services could significantly worsen conditions for vulnerable families.
The funding crisis comes as humanitarian organizations continue reporting increasing needs across the region. Aid agencies say many families remain dependent on international assistance due to displacement, damaged infrastructure, and limited access to basic services. The United Nations has urged governments and international donors to act quickly to prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian situation.
Diplomats are expected to continue discussions with donor countries in the coming weeks as efforts intensify to close the funding gap. UN officials stress that maintaining UNRWA's operations is essential not only for humanitarian reasons but also for supporting regional stability during a period of continued uncertainty in the Middle East.
